A roundup of great vocal house, progressive, deep, and electro for the weekend.Dillon Francis & Martin Garrix - Set Me FreeDillon Francis & Martin Garrix - "Set Me Free" - [COLUMBIA]

While interviewing Dillon Francis, he mentioned meeting Martin Garrix's parents and that they loved him like a second son.  That makes this track make perfect sense.  A Martin Garrix track has quite a specific sound, and while some of those elements are in "Set Me Free," they are distorted and expanded through Dillon's playful and unique production techniques.  Yes, you can hear elements of the drop and vocal effects of "Animals" or "Proxy," but they are contrasted with offbeat stabs, distortions, and playful rhythm changes that are quite, for lack of a better word, freeing. The variety of tempo and tonal effects make "Set Me Free" quite exuberant and perfect for big room club play.

Lane 8 ft Solomon Grey - "Without You" - [ANJUNA DEEP]

While "dream house" has a specific genre definition (Robert Miles "Children"), "Without You" could be described as dreamy house.  German producer Lane 8 goes deeper and mellower than his previous songs ("Be Mine," "I Got What You Need") by creating a hazy yet groovy house track with a beautiful keyboard line and a soundscape feel.  Buzzing duo Solomon Grey contribute the perfect vocal topline, complimenting the dreamy feel with a surprisingly emotional performance. If you are a fan of "Together" by Planet of Song ft Cider Sky or the recent 16 Bit Lolitas releases, "Without You" should be on your radar as well. https://soundcloud.com/lane8music/lane-8-diamonds

Danny Howard & Futuristic Polar Bears - "Romani" - [SPINNIN]

Following up "Vargo," the BBC Radio One DJ/producer teams up again with the Futuristic Polar Bears for another big room monster.  "Romani" stands out from the rest with the use of breakbeats in the drop down, a strikingly pretty drop, and being energetic without being too aggressive.  It's not a carbon copy of "Vargo," but it is clear that the two songs are by the same producers. The title is interesting, named after the gypsies of Indian origin.  The parallel to raver culture is there- with the focus on extended family and traveling to avoid persecution, but you can't help but think how much more special the track could have been if they would have embraced even more elements of the traditional Romani folk music.

Estelle - "Something Good" - [BMG]

We just wrote up a remix of "Conqueror" a few weeks ago, and already there is another hot dance song from Estelle.  "Something Good" is a mash of classic dance styles - a bit of hip house, that kick loop from Crystal Waters "100% Pure Love," vocal loops heard in many garage classics, and a funky horn line which seals the deal.  Keeping true to classic underground house, the vocal is surprisingly and refreshingly underproduced so that Estelle's voice and the song really shine through.  What is unclear is whether the Soundcloud track is just one song or two tracks mistakenly placed together.  At the four minute mark, "Something Good" fades down and a sexier downbeat house track comes in. Is this a homage to Deee-Lite, when they would segue two tracks together to make a new one?  Who knows, but both of these sounds (or parts) will whet your appetite for Estelle's forthcoming 'True Romance' album.
