“The Salutation of the Most Splendid Treasure” [salatu-l kanzu-l a’zam]
is one of the most blessed and beautiful prayers upon the Prophet
Muhammad, Allah bless him and give him peace. It is attributed to both
the lordly cardinal pole [al qutbu-r rabbani] Muhyiddin Abdu-l Qadir al-Jilani and the proof of Islam [hujjatu-l islam] Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazzali, may Allah be pleased with them both and sanctify their Secret.
Our Grand-Shaikh, Imam al-‘Arus (Allah illuminate his resting abode), attributes this prayer to Imam al-Ghazzali (Allah be pleased with him) and said that the Greatest Name [ismu-l a’zam] is to be found in this benediction. It is for this reason that he included it in the final supplication [du’a] of Ratib Jalaliyyah.
Shaikh Isma’il Muhammad Sa’id al-Qadiri (may Allah be pleased with him) said about this salutation in his treasury of Qadiri prayers and wisdom entitled, “Al-Fuyudat Ar-Rabbaniyya” as follows: “One benediction from it is worth a thousand benedictions, so you must acknowledge its excellent merit.”
Imam Al-Qadi Yusuf b. Isma’il al-Nabhani (may Allah have mercy on him), in Chapter 9 of his monumental sa‘adat al-darayn fi al-salat ‘ala sayyid al-kawnayn (Felicity in the Two Abodes Through Prayers upon the Master of the Two Realms), states:
“It is reported that Sheikh Shams al-Din al-‘Abdusi said, ‘Whoever recites this salutation after entering his home following the ‘isha’ prayer and recites thrice [surah ikhlas] and the two chapters for seeking refuge [al-mu’awadhatan i.e. surah al-falaq and surah al-nass], remaining silent and not speaking thereafter, he will certainly behold the Prophet salla-Llahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.’ The salutation is:
…
[Ahmad] al-Sawi said, ‘This prayer is also called shams al-kanz al-a’zam (The Sun of the Greatest Treasure). The heart of the one who reads this prayer will be shielded from the whisperings of Satan. Some have ascribed this prayer to the Lordly Cardinal Pole [al-qutb al-rabbani], my master ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. Whoever after praying the ‘isha’ prayer thrice reads al-ikhlas and the two chapters for seeking refuge [al-mu’awadhatan], and then reads this salutation on the Prophet salla-Llahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, he will behold the Prophet salla-Llahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in a dream vision.'”
