Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses
the U.S. of making the world a more dangerous place by imposing a
''unilateral diktat'' in international diplomacy. Deborah Lutterbeck
reports.
Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses
the United States of endangering global security by imposing a
"unilateral diktat" on the rest of the world.

SAYING (STARTS OVER SHOT OF MAN LISTENING AND CONTINUES ON WIDE OF HIM
SPEAKING):
"Maybe the exceptionalism of the United States, that is,
the way they implement their leadership, is it really beneficial to
everybody? And their constant interference in all the world's affairs
brings peace, well-being, progress, democracy? And we should just relax
and enjoy? I will allow myself to say it is not this way. It is not at
all this way. The unilateral diktat and the imposing of schemes have
exactly the opposite effect."
He says Russia has no intention of endangering the
sovereignty of its neighbors.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) PRESIDENT OF RUSSIAN FEDERATION
VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:
"We do not intend to make any blocs, get involved in the
exchange of blows. Statements that Russia is trying to reinstate some
sort of empire, that it is encroaching on the sovereignty of its
neighbors, are groundless. Russia does not require a special exclusive
place in the world, I want to underline it. Respecting the interests of
others, we simply want our interests to be taken into account as well,
and our position respected as well."
Putin has stepped up anti-Western rhetoric recently,
giving a boost to his popularity at home.
